● Music Career:
Freedia started in the entertainment industry in the early 2000s as a background dancer and vocalist for Katey Red’s program. Freedia grew up in the Melpomene Projects, and Red, a teenage drag queen, used to play bounce music there.
A successful track named “An Ha, Oh Yeah” was finally released by Freedia in 1999. While in Texas, she performed at several events across the city to help promote the bounce music genre. When Freedia returned to New Orleans, she launched a weekly club event called FEMA Fridays.
In this period, the rapper’s popularity grew to the point where he began getting booking requests from a wide variety of venues, including private parties, public events, nightclubs, and strip clubs. In those days, Big would go on tour 24-30 times a month.

Early Life
New Orleans, Louisiana is the place of Freddie Ross’ birth. He claims that music has always been an important part of his life, and that he even took piano lessons and sung in the choir as a kid. Patti LaBelle was one of the singers Freddie’s mother introduced him to; other musical influences were disco diva Sylvester, Michael Jackson, and Salt-N-Pepa.
Ross resumed his choral career at Walter L. Cohen High School, where he not only sang but also directed the chorus. Freedia claims that he had to force himself to perform in order to overcome his first fear of doing so.
Having spent his childhood only a few blocks away, Ross performed as a backup dancer and singer in Katey Red’s shows almost immediately after meeting her. Take Fo’ Records, the most well-known local bounce label, released Katey Red’s Melpomene Block Party in 1999 under their imprint.
Freedia came up with the decision to adopt “Freedia” as his stage name in reaction to a buddy giving him the nickname “Freedia” (pronounced “Freeda”). If one were to trust what Ross says, “I felt it would be fitting to give myself a rhymey name that was based on the fact that my mother ran a club called Diva, so I went with that.
